- A genetic tendency
- Past injury or surgery of the spine
- An occupation that requires repetitive or weight-bearing movements that involves the spine
- Anxiety or depression
- Psoriatic arthritis
- Smoking
- Being overweight
- Sedentary lifestyle
How does Spondylosis occur?
- Dehydrated Spinal Discs : The bones in the spine contain discs between them. The discs are thick, paddy cushions that help in absorbing the shock of twisting, lifting, and other rigorous activities. The presence of the gel-like material between the discs of the spine bones could dry out with the passage of time. Due to the drying up of the cushiony disc, there is increased friction between the bones as they start to rub together resulting in pain.
- Herniated Discs : A herniated disc develops when one of the disks in the spine ruptures or develops a crack. This happens due to the development of cracks in the spinal discs. These cracks allow the leakage of the internal gel required for cushioning. The gel and part of the outer disc could press on the nerves & spinal cord and would thus, result in spondylosis symptoms including pain radiating down to the arms and numbness.
- Bone Spurs : These are overgrowth of the bones in the neck or spine area. They may be due to the body trying to grow some extra bone to make the spine stronger. However, the growth of extra bones could start pressing on the delicate areas of the spine including the spinal cord, nerves and surrounding muscles –leading to pain & discomfort.
- Injury : An injury in your neck during some accident or fall, could accelerate the process leading to spondylosis.
Ayurveda Treatment for Spondylosis at UWAY:
The above-mentioned image provides an overview of the Ayurvedic approach to treating spondylosis. The duration of each treatment stage and prescribed therapies vary depending on the patient’s specific condition.
Spondylosis, often associated with age-related wear and tear, is primarily caused by a Vata imbalance in Ayurveda, which leads to tissue degeneration, stiffness, and pain in the neck or spine. It is essential to differentiate between mild and chronic spondylosis to provide the right treatment.
For mild spondylosis, our doctors recommend Ayurvedic formulations in the form of decoctions, herbal pastes, or medicated ghee, which help relieve stiffness, reduce pain, and restore flexibility to the spine.
For chronic spondylosis, UWAY Health follows a specialised Ayurvedic approach that includes:
1. Dietary Modifications: A tailored anti-inflammatory diet is recommended to support joint and spine health. Foods that pacify Vata and Kapha, such as warm, nourishing, and easily digestible meals, are emphasized to aid in reducing stiffness and pain.
2. Lifestyle Adjustments: Depending on the severity of the condition, our doctors may suggest specific lifestyle changes, including gentle yoga and relaxation practices that support spinal health, promote flexibility, and help manage stress.
3. Classical Ayurvedic Medications: Our UWAY doctors prescribe time-tested, proven classical Ayurvedic medicines from India’s top Ayurvedic medicine manufacturers. So, there is no common prescription for this condition because each patient’s condition is unique.
Therapies such as Panchakarma (detoxification) are often recommended, including Abhyanga (oil massage), Lepa (herbal paste application), and Basti (medicated enema), to target stiffness, reduce inflammation, and promote circulation in affected areas. Each therapy is customized to the individual, utilizing classical Ayurvedic formulations for effective pain management and long-term relief.
Managing spondylosis requires a comprehensive approach that not only addresses symptoms but also targets the root causes. Our Ayurveda-based treatments are designed to provide lasting relief and improve overall spinal health, supporting sustainable recovery and helping prevent further degeneration.
At UWAY, our doctors prescribe only proven medicines from well-established and reputed ayurvedic medicine manufacturers. However, just like certain foods do not always agree with everyones, few ayurvedic medicines may cause mild side effects in some patients. This is very rare though. In case you notice any such issue you can always talk to your consulting doctor or our medical team.
Ayurvedic treatments aim to not only alleviate symptoms such as pain, stiffness, and numbness but also potentially prevent further degeneration with regular use. They promote overall spine health and improve mobility without relying solely on symptomatic relief.
We require most of the medical records related to the current problem, the medicines you are on currently and for pre-existing conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, thyroid, cardiac issues etc.
